Over the years there has been a steady decline in the use of Cherokee by
Native Speakers. Prentice Robinson has dedicated much of his life to the
preservation and teaching of this beautiful language, with the hope of
altering this culturally, devastating trend.
This dictionary was conceived and compiled with the intention of retaining
accuracy, yet simplifying the learning process in the meantime. No matter what
level of fluency you may have, this dictionary is designed to aid you at your
level. With over 4,500 hundred entries, in English, Sequoyan Syllabary and
phonetics, this is the most complete Cherokee dictionary available, if not the
only one.
Along with an extensive vocabulary, Prentice Robinson also includes a brief
history and overview of the various dialects that have been used over the
years. Though his work focuses on the Overhill--more commonly referred to as
the Western Dialect--as it was the dialect used by Sequoya, it can be adapted
for use with the Kituwah (Eastern) dialect with relative ease as well.
